The Leica M4 is a 35 mm rangefinder camera produced by Ernst Leitz GmbH. The M4 started production in November 1966, as the direct successor of the M3 and M2, featuring framelines for 35 mm, 50 mm, 90 mm and 135 mm lenses in a 0.72 magnification viewfinder. It has the frame counter of the M3, with automatic reset after reloading.

2024年10月6日 · The Leica M4 was introduced in 1967, replacing the 1954 Leica M3 with a number of improvements; particularly much improved film handling and viewfinder bright lines for wide angle lenses. Like the M3, the M4 is an all mechanical manual exposure rangefinder camera without a built in exposure meter.

The Leica M4 featured in this classic camera review was manufactured during the first year of production (1967). Originally finished in chrome, sometime between the day it left the factory in Wetzlar Germany and the day I spotted it in the B&H Photo Used Department, somebody refinished the camera in matte olive paint with white detailing.

2020年6月19日 · First introduced in November 1966, the M4 was the fourth camera in the Leica M series line. It was a great camera that featured improvements on some of the shortcomings in the M2 and M3. For some Leica enthusiasts, the M4 was the best camera in the series—personally, I think the M3 was the best in the line.

We published this article at the time and it throws a light on the complicated history of the M4, a camera that was superseded by the M5 and then reinstated in Canada as the saviour of Leica.
