Athabasca Falls is a waterfall in Jasper National Park on the upper Athabasca River, approximately 30 kilometres (19 mi) south of the townsite of Jasper, Alberta, Canada, and just west of the Icefields Parkway. Athabasca Falls is a Class 5 waterfall, with a total drop height of 24 m (79 ft) and a width of 46 m (151 ft). [ 1 ] .

The 23-metre Athabasca Falls is not very high by Canadian Rockies standards, but the size of the river makes it one of the most powerful falls to be found in the mountain national parks. Pouring over a layer of hard quartzite, the falls have cut into the softer limestone beneath, carving intricate features, including potholes and a short canyon.

Even with a few downsides, Athabasca Falls remains one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Alberta, a must-see attraction in Jasper National Park, and one of the best stops on the Icefields Parkway drive.

Athabasca Falls is renowned for its natural beauty and stunning surroundings. The falls cascade down a rugged limestone canyon, which has been carved over thousands of years by the powerful force of the Athabasca River. The water plunges over a series of rock ledges and creates a mesmerizing display of mist, spray, and foam.

The Athabasca river falls over hard quartzite and through softer limestone, carving the shorter gorge and a number of potholes. Athabasca falls can be safely viewed and photographed from numerous platforms and hiking trails around the falls.

Things to do at Athabasca Falls. Walk along the interpretive trail along the Athabasca river and learn about the Athabasca river and the water fall. Hike along the canyon (stay on trail) and marvel at the deep canyon from various lookouts, caused by the flowing water, which still whittles away the rock floor few millimeters each year.

Athabasca Falls may not be the tallest waterfall in the Canadian Rockies, but iti delivers on power and drama. Plus, the falls are easy to access since they're just off the Icefields Parkway 30 km (19 mi) south of the Jasper townsite.
