Our research advances knowledge about current trends of farm equipment crashes in nine Midwestern states, and assesses if safety policies on lighting and marking help prevent crashes. Our project has now successfully accessed 2005-2010 farm equipment crash data from all nine state Departments of Transportation.

Most farmworker injuries and deaths are caused by tractor incidents such as overturns, runovers, power take-off (PTO) systems, and unintended contact with tractor attachments or implements. Employers are responsible for ensuring a safe work environment for every worker.

According to the Department of Labor, tractor accidents on farms cause the highest number of fatalities with tractor overturns accounting for 44 percent of all tractor fatalities. Fruit farms have the highest work injury rate among various specified agricultural operations (233 injuries per million hours of exposure).

They are a necessary part of farm work but exercising caution when using them is crucial in preventing accidents.
