In 1966, one prototype crashed after colliding with an F-104 Starfighter while flying in close formation; the remaining Valkyrie bomber is in the National Museum of the United States Air Force near Dayton, Ohio.

2020年6月7日 · Possibly Joe Walker was looking for a B-58A approaching at higher altitude while his F-104N (N813NA) inexplicably moved slightly closer to the Valkyrie and then rose suddenly so that the left tip of its horizontal stabilizer touched the XB-70’s drooped wingtip.

Second prototype of the XB-70A Valkyrie was involved in a mid-air collision with a Lockheed F-104 Starfighter during a photo shooting over Barstow, CA. The pilot of the Valkyrie ejected and landed serious injured. The co-pilot of the XB-70A and the pilot of the Starfighter were killed.

The crew of the Valkyrie, initially unaware of the collision, continued in straight and level flight for 16 seconds. However, the aircraft entered into a unrecoverable flat spin. The XB-70 continued down until it struck the desert floor.

One of the largest and most unusual planes ever made, the XB-70 Valkyrie, was destroyed in an accident during a photo shoot following a regularly scheduled test mission.

The results of the crash -- Joe Walker's F-104 Horizontal tail shows impact and scratch marks. Walker's F 104 was the only plane that struck the XB-70. In the flight formation the XB-70 outer wings were folded down. Walker was using the engine inlet ramp and the wing leading edge of the XB-70 as a reference for his position in the formation.
