The catecholamines dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine are neurotransmitters and/or hormones in the periphery and in the central nervous system (CNS) (for reviews, see [1, 2]). NE is a neurotransmitter in the brain as well as in postganglionic, sympathetic neurons.

Most pheochromocytomas secrete predominantly NE, many produce both NE and EPI, and more rarely others secrete predominantly EPI. The differences in catecholamine secretion reflect differences in expression of catecholamine biosynthetic enzymes and can explain differences in presenting symptoms.
