Over the last 20 years, thousands of KO mice have been developed worldwide, providing drug discovery scientists with access to this critical resource to investigate the role of potential drug targets. KO mice have become an invaluable tool for determining target function, selectivity and potential toxicity liabilities (Sacca et al., 2009).

C57BL is probably the most widely used of all inbred strains, (substrain C57BL/6 alone accounts for over 14% of occasions on which an inbred strain is used) though in many ways it seems to be atypical of inbred strains of laboratory mice.

We analyzed the substrain status of 2,939 genetically modified C57BL/6 mice deposited at the RIKEN BioResource Research Center (BRC) (Fig. 2). Each substrain was further subdivided into substrains supplied by several vendors.
