The history of ancient Egypt lasted until the country became a Roman province in the 1st century B.C. Egypt was ruled before then by thirty dynasties, or families, of kings and queens, often called the pharaohs.

Many historians group the history of Ancient Egypt into three major kingdoms: the Old Kingdom, the Middle Kingdom, and the New Kingdom. The Old Kingdom lasted from around 2649 BC to 2150 BC. The Middle Kingdom then came from around 2030 BC to 1640 BC. Finally, the New Kingdom spanned from about 1550 BC to 1070 BC.

Egypt comes under the rule of the Roman Empire. 395 - Egypt becomes part of the Byzantine Empire (the Eastern Roman Empire). 641 - The Arabs conquer Egypt and convert the land to Islam. 969 - The capital city is moved to Cairo. 1250 - The Mamluks take control of Egypt. 1517 - Egypt is conquered by the Ottoman Empire.
