BLACK CANVAS | REVERBERATIONS OF FREEDOM, curated by NSOROMMA, is a series of pan-African cultural production processes threaded together by themes of liberation and creativity. Hawa Y Mire and I conceptualized NSOROMMA with a vision of incubating, supporting and amplifying insurgent Black art and artists.
The Past Was Black (Chapter 13) - The Boundaries of Freedom
Its goal is to resituate the notorious canvas within the complex transitions from bondage to freedom that began in the 1870s and lingered through the 1910s. It argues that Redenção is a painting just as much about a black nineteenth-century emancipationist past as it is about a whitened twentieth-century post-emancipation future.
