A genetically modified mouse, genetically engineered mouse model (GEMM) [1] or transgenic mouse is a mouse (Mus musculus) that has had its genome altered through the use of genetic engineering techniques. Genetically modified mice are commonly used for research or as animal models of human diseases and are also used for research on genes.

Global knockouts are the most basic type of genetically modified mice and, while they have a number of important limitations (Eisener-Dorman et al., 2009), have been critical in initially evaluating the importance of a specific gene to nervous system function.

Several groups have generated mice that carry mutations in the cystic fibrosis gene, and potential mouse models now exist for understanding and developing new therapies for cystic fibrosis. Other single-gene defects, such as Gaucher's disease and -thalassemia have also been generated in mice by gene-targeting.

Over the past decade, new methods and procedures have been developed to generate genetically engineered mouse models of human disease.
