Shetland, also called the Shetland Islands, is an archipelago in Scotland lying between Orkney, the Faroe Islands, and Norway. It is the northernmost region of the United Kingdom. Until 1975, it was known as Zetland.

There is little evidence of direct connection between Faroe and Shetland before the 19th century, but traditions and sagas, confirmed and modified by archaeology, indicate that from time to time they came under the same influences.

The Faroe–Shetland Channel is stretch of the North Atlantic lying between the two island groups of Shetland and the Faroe Islands. The channel is a rift basin that separates the Scottish and the Faroese continental shelves, and has a maximum depth of 1900 m, compared to the surrounding seabed which mostly lies at 200 m.
