Jan 28, 2025 · Smoky Falls Generating Station is located on the Mattagami River system near Kapuskasing. The station originally had two generating units which began operating in 1931. A third unit was added in 2015 increasing the station’s maximum capacity to 267 MW.

Jul 11, 2014 · Water from the Smoky Falls GS is returned to the Mattagami River via a 400 metres long tailrace canal that converges with the diversion spillway and the tailrace for the old original Smoky Falls generating station. The new Smoky Falls GS dam, spanning 200 metres in length, is made of concrete.

Nov 20, 2023 · The dam was first constructed in 1931 by the Spruce Falls Power and Paper Company and, at the time, was the only one on the Mattagami River system. Later, generating stations were built at Little Long, Harmon and Kipling, along with the Adam Creek spillway, which made spillways at Smoky Falls obsolete.

The Lower Mattagami Hydroelectric Complex is made up of four generating stations on the Mattagami River. The four stations are (from south to north): Little Long, Smoky Falls, Harmon, and Kipling. They are about 70 kilometers northeast of Kapuskasing and about 150 kilometers upstream of Moose Factory and the Town of Moosonee.

May 29, 2019 · This project retired the old 52-megawatt (MW) Smoky Falls Generating Station and constructed a new 271-MW station immediately adjacent to the existing plant. In addition, a new generating unit was added to three other power generating stations along the Mattagami River: Little Long, Kipling and Harmon.
